Legends of a Transylvanian Shrine to the Virgin Mary

My paper presents a legend tradition related to well-known Hungarian (Transyl­vanian) place of pilgrimage. Csíksomlyó (Miercurea–Ciuc/Sumuleu) – cur­rently part Romania ‒ has become significant pilgrimage in the 20th century, similarly Austria’s Mariazell, Spain’s Santiago de Compostela, Orthodox Church’s Athos, or main international shrines Virgin Mary (Lourdes, Fatima, Medjugorje). Around this famous known from 15th century thematically rich circle developed over centuries, typical folklore, which abounds historical and narrative traditions. At centre group legends stands statue Mary, gothic origin, miraculous reputation is complemented by several themes (foundational traditions, wars, heroes saints, crime punish­ment other motifs inspired sacred place). I highlight most important perspectives, chronological characteristics, geographical distribution and, above all, typological diversity these legends. The shrine totality that say, both hundred-year-old miracle stories found written form different sources, recent folklore texts collected oral tradi­tion.
